Natural Depression Solutions to Help Improve Mood

Week 2: Natural Depression Solutions:  Stress Management

We live in a world of high stress - rushing with kids, responding to work emails on all our new “techy” gadgets and upkeep of daily responsibilities leaves many people in a state of adrenal fatigue.   Symptoms of adrenal fatigue are similar to depression including low energy, decreased motivation to do things, difficulty waking in the morning, low libido, decreased ability to handle stress, difficult to enjoy life, “brain fog” thinking and memory loss.

ROUTINE is the number one activity to support adrenals.  Any time you change your routine the adrenals help you adapt to that change.  Eating times through the day, balancing blood sugar with diet, bed/wake times and work times - keeping these consistent helps regulate the adrenals.

Prioritizing your “To Do” list - what can be delegated to your children, spouse or a friend?  Or can you possibly drop a couple things from the list - lower your standards of what “must” be done!  Yoga has been shown in studies to increase GABA, a neurotransmitter that helps improve mood and decrease anxiety.   Many naturopathic remedies such as B complex and adaptogenic herbs (rhodiola, licorice, Siberian ginseng) also help support adrenals.  Check with Dr Wales and I in your next visit to see if these are appropriate for you.

Watch for next week to learn about the thyroid and treating physiological neurotransmitter imbalances in the body naturally!

Take care,

Dr. Bunzenmeyer ND

Thank you for this post, V. Synchronously, anxiety hit me aorund 2 today. And the sense of dread, that something bad is going to happen or that I'm forgetting something very important. Anxiety, shallow breaths, and part of me very tired. I took today off to get Very Important August errands done. Despite telephone tag, I've even done some. Anxiety might be different than adrenaline, but it shares that fight or flight urge. It just hit today, but for a few days I've felt like I'm pushing my luck. (I played cards on Sunday, conservatively for once.) Anxiety might be more negative than adrenaline, but close enough that I tried ten minutes. Trying to spread that anxiety aorund, up to the dopey part of my brain, smear out from my chest, especially fingers and toes. Put the jangle of nerves into my limbs. Something different to be moving energy aorund rather than fighting the energy. Leaves me less afraid of the anxiety. Very interesting how the anxiety kept sproinging back into my chest. Also interesting how good my legs and feet feel. I don't think I reached the dopeyness in my head. The kind of meditation I infrequently do is different, and less attractive at such times.
