Natural Depression Solutions to Help Improve Mood

This is a common question we get as naturopathic doctors in our practice - people seeking natural solutions to depression or low moods.   Many people suffer with low moods or depression affected by weather/seasonal affective disorder (SAD) during the winter months or an on-going low mood throughout the year.   Sadness, crying, anger, withdrawing from social activities are common symptoms of depression but physical symptoms such as poor concentration, fatigue, decreased libido and a loss of interest in activities that usually were found pleasurable are also very common.

From a naturopathic perspective there are many angles to approach this from, simply meaning - many different solutions to look at.  For the next 3 weeks we will have a new post of various topics that are important to consider when treating depression.

Week 1:  Nutrition

Diet is a first approach.  Refined carbs and sugars trigger a decreased mood and increased anxiety.  A balanced diet of protein (legumes, raw nuts, chicken, fish, turkey, eggs, tofu with each meal), complex carbohydrates (veggies, fruits, brown grains such as rice, quinoa, spelt, kamut) and healthy fats (olive/fish/flax oil, avocado and raw nuts and seeds) will put energy in your step and help boost mood.

Balanced meals will have a protein source + whole grain + healthy fat + vegetables.  For example, Chicken or fish with brown rice and steamed broccoli or salad with olive oil dressing (low sugar).

Snacks: Fruit with raw nuts (almonds, pecans etc), hummus & veggies, veggies & raw nuts, protein smoothie or protein bar.

It is also worth noting that many times in depression it is difficult to have the energy and motivation to provide yourself with the nutrition you need.  Stay tuned to next week's blog on managing stress to help increase your energy.

Take care,

I do eat a diet that is high in preiton, and I like whey preiton shakes made with fat free milk. My fiance loves the preiton bars, but I have to be honest that I think they are not good for you. They contain a lot of sugars and fats, and are very processed. As far as high fiber bars, they are mostly the same with high sugar contents and processing.Soluble fiber is very good for your heart and cholesterol levels, and insoluble fiber is very good for your digestive tract, but I prefer to get these from eating a wide variety of fruits and veggies. Especially the vegetables.Anyway, good luck to you! Either way, I think you'll lose weight, which will be good for your body overall, so just pick the one with less sugar and whichever one tastes the best. If it tastes like poo you won't stick to your diet!!References :

Juicing is definitely easier than eating a fruit/veggie one by one. You do get the same nutrients, in fact when health doctors give you natural remedies for whatever ails you, they always include juicing. The best way to make juice out of the veggies is to have fruits mixed in too so it’s sweet. For example, if you make a green juice, you would add green peppers and lettuce leaves and stuff like that, but you also would add green apples (green juices are pretty gross, I’ll be honest). So you might want to try veggies combined with carrots and apples. The carrots and apples make a pretty good combo and usually over power whatever other veggie you might put in there.

V8 and tomato juice are pasturized, which kills off the nutritional value. Yes, you need fresh fruits and veggies for a well balanced diet-try some that you havent had before-you might be surprised how good they are. Try some ruttabega oven fries, swiss chard, artichoke, turnip, etc. You would be doing your health a favor if you purchased a juice extractor and made fresh V8, tomato, and other juice blends
